accessory structureGenerally, all accessory residential structures require a building/zoning permit unless they are single-story structures less than 256 sq. ft.  Fences also do not require a building permit.   Even structures that do not require permits must meet all zoning requirements, including setbacks.   See Accessory Structures hand-out for more information.

To apply for an accessory structure permit you will need:

  1. Building/Zoning Permit Application

  2. Contractor Identification Form

  3. 2 copies of building plans:
          a.  Plans are required to include a scaled top view of the                       structure. Including the placement of openings and the                     opening sizes. A sketch on graph paper will satisfy the                      requirement.
          b.  Decide if your shed will be on a slab, skids or girders.
          c.  Click the appropriate type and complete all line items. 

  4. 2 copies of a plat showing the proposed structure drawn to scale with the setbacks clearly marked.  Private well and septic - indicate location of those components on the plat.

  5. Adding bathrooms in accessory structures will require a construction permit from the Health Department office.

  6. Fees:  Minimum fees are collected at time of application submittal.  See Fee Schedule for all fees and the amount of Minimum Fees due with application.  Fees are payable by exact cash, credit card or check – starter checks will NOT be accepted. Credit cards accepted are Visa, MasterCard & Discover and will only be accepted in person.  A convenience fee of 2.5% will be added to all credit card transactions.  

  Note:  For larger accessory structures, a Land Disturbing Permit may
  also be required.

                          -Land Disturbing Permit more than 1 acre

Review and Approval Process

Once all materials are submitted, the application is reviewed by Zoning staff, E&S staff and the Building Plans Reviewer.   See Plan ReviewTải game bắn cá for more detail about the Building Plans Review process.

The review process generally takes 2-3 weeks if plans are complete at time of first submission.  If not, additional time is required for resubmission and review.  

Once all reviews are complete Permitting staff will contact the applicant to let them know the permit is ready to issue. 


When returning to pick up the permit you will need to pay the remaining fees.  The balance due will be provided by Permitting staff when they call.

Most Accessory Structures require the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) before the structure can be utilized.  The CO cannot be issued until the following are completed/provided:

  1. All building inspections passed.
  2. It may take up to 48 hours to process your CO.
